Home security is another aspect of self-defense that should be considered, and it is different than home defense. If you are forced to resort to a home-defense option, then your home security has already been compromised. No home is impenetrable, and every home can be broken into. When it comes to home security, there are layers. The first step is to do all you can to make your home look like a tough nut to crack, or at least like a less appealing target than the next house on the street. That’s a harsh way to look at it, but it is reality. Criminals will most often take the easiest prize available to them, and anything you can do to harden your home’s defenses is a positive step towards securing your castle. A home security system won’t stop a home invader from breaking in, but it may deter them from trying. Having a loud and barking dog or two could also be enough to make a criminal move along in search of an easier target. Covering the basics like locking your doors and windows, adding multiple dead bolts to your doors at different height levels, reinforcing door frames and adding motion-activated lights around your property are all inexpensive steps you can take today that will greatly improve the security of your home and the areas surrounding it.
